up to speed

a work-in-progress book
by jen goertzen

Starting a new role is
exhilarating and exhausting.

We show up Day 1, riding the rush from conversations with our soon-to-be teammates about all the great things we'll do together. And then it all comes crashing down.

All the visions we had before joining are lost in the wave of new information, new people and rituals, new expectations—the ones they tell you, the ones they don't. The professional you were in interviews feels far away, someone you pretended to be.

When we talk about our jobs, we don't talk about this part, about the beginning. Instead, we talk about what came after we found our feet, when we're moving with ease as if we've always been here. Once we're the professionals we promised we'd be, that's when the story begins.

What if you could start
at the beginning?

You were hired for a reason. Your team saw a better version of the future when you were in it. The interviews are done, it’s time to get to work.

Your first months in a new team should and can be about possibilities: what you'll do here, who you'll become and, even more, what your team can become. Making all that happen isn’t just up to your new team, it’s also up to you.

Get to your flow state faster.

No job is alike and you’re a different designer / product manager / developer at every one. But your past experiences (and selves) are invaluable in helping you make the most of what’s next. This book will show you how to use what you already know to make sense of what you don't.

You can create a path towards that future you talked about, a place where you thrive, where everything flows.

What’s next?

I’m working on this book as we speak. Stick with me, maybe even help me. I’m collecting stories of “being new” experiences, from both sides: new joiners and their teams.
